The mostly humorous ramblings of my day to day existence.

It’s a Road Trip!

Firkroy and the gang are getting ready to hit the road, southern California here we come!
My son saw it first. “What’s that white ball on top of Daryl’s flag pole?” he asked.
I told him that I thought it was just the cap on top of the flag pole. I did think a white ball was a bit different at the time, they’re usually gold or silver I thought to myself, or in the shape of a bird.
Later that evening my son stepped outside to admire the bright crescent moon. Oregon in July usually provides clear skies that we don’t get at other times of the year; it was a treat to gaze on the sliver of a moon without clouds in the way.
“It glows all sorts of colors.” He said
“Glowing? What glows all sorts of colors?” I replied a bit bewildered.
“The top of Daryl’s flagpole, it’s changing colors.” He said excitedly.
Red, then green, and then blue it glowed. I had never seen the top of a flagpole glow like that. I’m starting to believe that I am actually living in some sort of Facebook game where you get points for building crazy stuff in your yard. What’s next an Egyptian tomb? Will mummies start walking around visiting all of the other neighbors’ crazy yards? Am I supposed to build a Chinese garden with a coy pond in my yard? Should I be making friends with the neighbor that threw fish on my roof to get extra points?
My son gets off to bed, and my wife and I sit down to watch some old episodes of Star Trek Voyager. I introduced this series to her when we were dating but she never got to see the beginning of the series, so it’s our after the bed treat when the kids go to bed. Neelix the alien they picked up in the first episode had his lungs zapped out of his body by organ snatchers, so the holographic doctor made some holographic lungs to keep him alive until the end of the program. Now that’s entertainment!
After the show my wife asks “Are the chickens in bed?” I hadn’t put them to bed, so I guess the answer was no. We need to close their coop up every night to keep raccoons from snacking on them. Ok, ok, I won’t say it, but most of us already know what chickens taste like to raccoons.
*whispers*… “Chicken”
The kids destroyed all of the real flashlights, because apparently they’re fun to ruin. The toy ones we buy for them must NOT be fun to ruin because they’re the only ones that work.
My wife hands me a six inch lightsaber that glows blue, and tells me it’s the only flashlight she could find. I fire up my miniature blue lightsaber and proceed into the dark. If I’m ambushed by Darth Vader’s Mini Me I’m all set. The little light saber gives me enough light to tip toe through the chicken poo to get to their coop. 1,2,3,4,5, and 6 yep all present and accounted for. I collect up the laid eggs, lock up the coop, and head back toward the house.
“I hate chickens” I mumble to myself.
We are making a trip to southern California to visit Legoland, and the next morning we are back to the pre-road trip planning and tasks. My wife has been making checklists everyday with thing to do and assigning us both duties. Letters from our first names are written next to our respective tasks. I yell at the boys to turn down the TV blaring “Power Ranger Roar, Power Ranger Roar!” and we wonder why they spend so much time Kung Fuing each other.
I have real coffee to drink this morning; I did have to get a tongue transplant after consuming some instant black sludge the other day but luckily it didn’t hurt much.
Packing the minivan for the trip has to be done in a way that optimizes space, and properly occupies our young “Are we there yet” travelers. I did invest in a little DVD player, a small price to pay for pleasant conversations with my spouse. Of course they will have books and other things to occupy their time, and if they get real bored maybe they can look out of the windows and count cows.
OK so, first aid kit - check. Yeah, I suppose we should patch up the kids if they beat each other up or get bit by rattlesnakes. We threw in a snakebite kit for giggles.
Kid’s cloths packed - check. If it were up to them they would wear one pair of cloths for the whole trip, but we probably couldn’t take the smell.
Sunscreen - check. Not the spray on stuff, we found out that it doesn’t really work so well. I’m starting to look like George Hamilton after using that stuff.
iPod charged - check. You need to drown out the fighting in the backseat somehow if it breaks out.
I hear they have apple fries at Legoland, wow apple pie in a French fry container what will they think of next! My son’s have never really been out of Oregon and I think they are a little apprehensive about going into California. Both my wife and I have lived in California but in different parts. I spent years in the bay area and my wife lived in and around L.A.
My oldest son keeps talking about Black Widow spiders “Can we collect some and make a habitat for them dad?” he asks.
“We don’t need to make a habitat for them son, they already have one, It’s called California.” The thought of keeping Black Widow spiders in my house makes my skin crawl. The memories of the Black Widow body count we kept while working in a radio repair shop in Livermore should have stayed crammed away in my brain where I hid it many years ago, but here I am thinking about it again.
When you read this we will probably be driving on Interstate 5 someplace, I5 stretches from Canada to Mexico and we’ll be traveling most of it on this trip. It will take two days and we’ll only stop to feed kids chicken nuggets, get more gas, and spend the night in Sacramento which is our halfway point. I’ll miss Daryl, but I’m sure that the California locals will provide more than enough entertainment to keep me happy. Good thing I have this George Hamilton suntan, I’ll blend right in.

Reality

Take a moment, open your eyes, and really think about reality.
It’s what you can touch.
It’s what you can experience.
It’s the feeling inside when you hear your child cry.
It’s what you can see.
It’s right in front of you.
It’s when you step back and look from the outside.
It’s yesterday, it’s now, but tomorrow’s reality has yet to unfold.
It’s the history of the past.
It’s the chair you are sitting in, right now.
It can be imagined, but it can’t be made up, or called into being with wishful thinking.
It can’t be wished away, it’s not dust to be swept under a rug.
It can be twisted.
It doesn’t play favorites, it can be argued over, but it will not change.
It’s not the spoken word, but of the actions of the speaker.
Faith can be a reality, but reality is not faith.

It’s The 4th of July and It’s Summer Time!

Up Yours English Overlords! Happy Independence Day my fellow American citizens! It’s the beginning of summer, Whoo Hoo! My neighbor is up to stuff, and its vacation time!
My neighbor, AKA Daryl had a cement mixer in front of his house the other day; his front yard is mostly a vegetable garden with trees that have had the limbs cut away half way up. There is a big dirt berm that lies between his yard and the road; he digs at it from time to time.
“What could he possibly be doing over there?” I think to myself.
Today I had my answer; a huge American flag is flying from a new 20 foot flag pole just in time for the 4th of July! Daryl always struck me more as a flower power, doobie toking, anti-establishment kind of guy, but what do I know. I’ve always considered your service to your fellow citizens as being much more important than displaying a big piece of cloth, but today is a good day to fly Old Glory.
About six feet away from the flag pole is another new pole planted next to the dirt hill, it has a large solar panel mounted on top of it. Parked next to it is his old rusty step van with a huge sun painted on the back, and the hood is up. A cable was running to the battery of his van from the panel. He told me once that he was completely off grid now, which I think is pretty cool, so this new panel must be a battery charger.
I started to wonder, wouldn’t a new battery for your van be cheaper than planting a solar panel in front of your house to charge it up? Nah, that’s crazy talk.
Ah, the morning coffee, oh you morning beans, Sluuuurp. GAH! *cough, spit*
I had to dip into the emergency coffee rations this morning. I don’t care what the advertisements say, instant coffee sucks. That caffeinated sludge should only to be consumed in case of dire emergencies, like this.
Take a sip, make a face, wipe off tongue, and repeat.
“Bill Friday would never let himself run out of coffee, and drink instant black gunk!” I think to myself.
My weather station on the desktop on my computer desktop shows a few clouds, but outside of my window it’s raining.
“Liar, liar pants on fire” I say to the computer. But wait! I get to play hooky on my outside honey-dos, our garden won’t need to be watered, and I bet Daryl’s solar panel isn’t doing much charging.
The Register Guard sits in front of me, cup O crappy Joe next to it. The front page is full of the usual hideous drivel. The top story, Faux News targets Eugene’s city council about the pledge of elegance not being recited enough times per year for them. I bet they recite the pledge before sitting on the crapper over there at Faux, and salute as they hit the flusher. As I read the article I see that Faux blew things out of proportion, sensationalized their story, and misrepresented everything; a thousand nutcases sent hate ridden email messages to Eugene, it’s what happens when you yell “Grab your torch and pitchfork!”
Anyway, the REAL news is on the next page.
“Vine said to resemble Jesus” the news report says.
Kent Hardison of Kinston, North Carolina said “I glanced at it, and it looks like Jesus, You can’t spray Jesus with Roundup.”
It sounded to me more like Kent getting out of his honey do list, plus everyone knows that Jesus only gives you special treatment when his face is grilled into your cheese sandwich.
OK at least my morning oatmeal is real, with fresh strawberries (that weren’t sprayed with Raid), walnuts, and a nanner, finished off with some skimmed milk. It’s a breakfast that I have grown to love. Gone are the days when I could clog my arteries with whatever fatty meat object I happen to stuff in my mouth. These days I eat the food equivalent of drain cleaner, and I like it!
But at lunch I found some fried chicken, no Ranch dressing, but I did find some leftover spinach dip! Oh manna from the gods is fried chicken dunked in spinach dip! You have to treat yourself now and then.
Talking about fatty meat chunks, when bacon gets cooked at our house, mainly for the kids *wink* *wink* *wink*, we drain the fat into a suet mix for our feathered friends that frequent the bird feeder; the fat is mixed with bird seed in small cardboard containers. One of the containers fell on the ground last week and the dog apparently ate the contents. He’s a little dog, and we started finding little bird seed loafs all around the yard the next day. I guess bird seed doesn’t digest well in dogs.
Our big family vacation is a week away, a road trip to a theme park in southern California. If we had girls then I suppose we would be bringing our little princesses to Disneyland, but we have boys, and they are Lego men.
Birthdays, give them a Lego set.
Christmas, a big Lego set.
A tooth falls out, another Lego set.
There are Legos every friggen place in this house! I regularly see the cat with a storm trooper helmet in her mouth or batting around the torso of Darth Vader. I’m occasionally hopping around on one foot grabbing the other in pain, after stepping on one. So we are going to Legoland!
The preparation has been arduous, booking hotels (making sure they serve breakfast), buying tickets, changing the batteries in toothbrushes shaped like crayons. We have our neighbor’s 23 year old daughter house sitting for us while we are gone to look after our menagerie. We made sure to train her on how to use the Spotbot our magic little carpet cleaner, the dog likes to barf up interesting things he has eaten.
My wife loves her bots. I think she is upset that we aren’t living the life the Jetsons promised us in the 60s, with a robot maid, and flying cars. She has a Roomba that routinely bumps into my bare toes as it tears around vacuuming the floor. She knows that I think it’s annoying but, I don’t have to vacuum the floor, so it’s a Win Win situation.
I can’t wait for the road trip! What is a summer without a road trip? We may even stop by the La Brea Tar Pits, the boys can’t wait to see where dinosaurs drowned in goo!

Pack Your Bags

On the advice of a nurse I did pack my bags, I heard him speak in the background.
They were the last words that I ever would hear, but I didn’t know.
I packed in a rush, my heart was so low, and I kissed my family goodbye.
I drove on the road, the snow covered road over mountains in the dead of the winter.
My mind was racing, there was nothing I could do, and the end, was rushing forward.
I drove through the gate, with emotions that were put down.
My sister, her husband, the last caretakers of the man who cared for me.
I worked up my courage to walk down the stairs to the room where the man lies.
Each step a labor, a helpless labor.
He looked comfortable there with his bed raised up, although closed were his eyes as he breathed.
One finger he had placed into the corner of his mouth, like a child sleeping.
I sat down beside him, and put his hand in mine, and told him that he was loved.
I could feel a slight grasp, so I knew that he had heard me say goodbye.
The room was so calm, peacefulness hung in the air.
His labored breathing was steady, but gurgling meant his time was near.
I had seen this before with my sister years passed, it was her birthday the day before.
The man was talking that day and had no sense of time, but he knew of his daughter’s birthday.
“How did you know of her birthday today?” He was asked.
“Because she told me” he replied.
With this I did know, he was going to go, with those that would show him the way.
We are now all alone, my sister and I. Our families are closer than ever.
I still pick up the phone to call home to the father that was always there.

Let’s Stick It To The Man!

I’m talking about the villains, the ones that are stealing from all of us. I stab them in the heart with my pen! Young children and old men with weak tickers are advised to read no further.
"That's all I can stands, cuz I can't stands n'more!" said Popeye the sailor before opening a can of spinach using his pipe as a blow torch, then munching down the contents in one gulp. Today I’m torching open a can, eating my spinach, and delivering a well deserved thrashing to lowlifes in need of serious wedgie time.
Top of the list are Lobbyists, these useless, lower than worm dirt leaches on society are the source of most things evil. Like molesters with candy, lurking around the playground, these tools of the corporate world pay visits around Washington. With pockets bulging with cash they search for someone to bribe. They ask for tax breaks with their money, they bribe, and you pay! Instead of your money going for new bridges, or Forest Rangers, it’s given away as corporate welfare to undeserving fat cats, and it’s all legal!
“Scummy Lobbyists, I stab thee with my pen!”
Next up, are the politicians that take the bribe money from the lobbyists. The money grabbing game wouldn’t even be happening if this bunch of crooks hadn’t made it legal in the first place. Egotistical to the core, these slime bags are co-conspirators in the money dance with lobbyists. Sure, there may be a few good ones out there, but most are self serving scum! It doesn’t matter what happens to you as long as they get their big buck payday from the lobbyists. The worst of the bunch become lobbyists themselves!
I think I’m going to hurl!
But Wait! Glug, Glug, Glug. Thank you pink stuff from the plastic bottle!
“In the heart! Slimy self serving bastards!”
Let’s not forget the Health care Insurance companies; there is a special level of hell waiting for the purveyors from these institutions of greed. They will steal from you every chance they get, and they couldn’t care less if you fall over dead.
Insure my house, yes!
Insure my car, yes!
But insure my body? What am I a Volvo?
The risk to some faceless shareholder should NOT be a consideration if I need to see a doctor! Today in the U.S. if you are not old enough to get Medicare, and aren’t covered by a job, then you are just screwed. This model blows; we should have a single payer system period! We can work out the details for a single payer system, but basically we all pay in, and we all benefit by getting the basic necessities that we need.
Am I talking about getting things like getting bigger boobs? Well no, bigger boobs are nice, but it usually won’t kill you to not to have them. But, it will kill you if you can’t see a doctor for some easily cured ailment!
“Your days are numbered Health Insurance Bandits!”
Mr. T will be giving all of the above a visit, and it’s WEDGIE TIME!
“I pity the fool who crosses Firkroy!” Mr. T will say, as he hangs you by your Fruit of the Looms on the nearest lamp post. Graffiti artists will have full creative license to pretty you up while you hang there, cockroach or evil clown would be my recommendation.
Last on my list of thieves is a water robber, the Low-Flow Toilet!
Who devised this ridiculous potty stool, a plunger company!?
The concept is fine; to save water you use less of it when you flush. BUT, YOU DON”T SAVE WATER IF IT TAKES THREE FLUSHES!
How does Mr. T give a toilet a wedge? I just don’t know.
“Damn you! Low-Flow Toilet son of bitches!”

The Reluctant Carpenter

I didn’t want to replace it, but it had to be done, my bedroom window was shot, so ready or not I was going to be a carpenter.
I was not born with a hammer in my hand, my father was a duct tape man, and doing a legitimate repair job wasn’t something I had picked up from him. But with the help of books, the internet, and crazy neighbors I learned enough to keep my house from falling down around me.
Discount Windows in Junction City was the place to go when you needed a replacement window; they had funny commercials on TV, came highly recommended, and it’s always fun to see those crazy TV commercial guys in real life. A double paned aluminum mess of a window had lost its seal, and was full of gunk in between the panes. I had the time, and a little cash, so it was now or never.
I loaded up the boys (who were bugging me for milkshakes) into my Chevy Blazer and headed down the road. Junction City was a short trip and we found the place easily right off of highway 99. There they were, the guys from the crazy TV commercials, friendly guys, and they had the window that I needed for only $149. It was the last one I was told, I thought for a few seconds and said “SOLD!” I’m not one for passing up an opportunity when I see it.
“This is a $300 window” the salesman tells me as he looks through the panes.
“Yeah it looks like the one I originally looked at is the best one” the salesman tells me.
“Didn’t he say it was the last one?” I think to myself. No matter, it was still a good price and I needed it. I help him hoist it up onto the cargo rack on my Blazer. I got out the bungee cords and strapped it down, we hit the Dairy Queen for shakes on the way out (it’s what dads do), then started the slow and cautious ride home. I took it slow and easy to ensure my prize didn’t shatter by bumps before we got there.
Upon pulling into my drive way, Daryl one of my neighbors was outside. My oldest son and I started to wrestle the window into the back yard when I hear.
“I’ll help you get that put in, when you get ready” Daryl says.
“OK, I’ll take you up on that” I yell back.
Daryl is a certifiable nut case, but I needed someone to help me lift the window in place. The week before Daryl had been walking up and down the street barefoot upset over his botched vasectomy. He had some rookie doctor perform the procedure and he ended up with testicles the size of grapefruits, I did feel sorry for Daryl with his enlarged nuts, but any man would be sympathetic.
I made the mistake one morning of coming out of my door to get the newspaper, there was Daryl on his morning pity walk, and he saw me.
“Good morning Daryl” I say to him in a half awake, still need coffee sort of way.
Daryl heads strait for me saying “Can I have a hug?”
“Did somebody die?” I think to myself.
Daryl comes up to me with arms stretched and gives me a big hug.
“You’ve always been there for me” he says.
“Man, get back on your happy pills Daryl” I think to myself, or maybe he needs to get off of the happy pills. Either way some sort of medication issue has got to be causing this neurotic behavior.
When I needed a hand lifting the window, I called upon Daryl just long enough to get my window up and in place. The price was steep; I had to endure Daryl rambling something about Zen and the neighbor that threw fish on my roof, and him wanting me to mend relations with him. I’m sure Daryl smokes way too much pot on top of his pill problem.
I contort my face when he’s not looking I say “Yeah sure Daryl, I’ll get right on that buddy.”
I spend three days of hard labor pulling down a wall, installing the window, building a new wall, and reframing everything. Lots of sweat, scrapes, many ibuprofens, and being sore as hell, I now have a new window and wall. It still needs to be painted but I’m pretty damn happy with the results.
I’m avoiding crazy Daryl as much as possible, sometimes it’s hard because he has a thing for his wood chipper, and spends hours outside feeding it. *I shiver*
I know my dad is sitting on that cloud right now wondering why I didn’t just duct tape in a new window, but he would have been proud of the job that I did, I love you dad!

Curse you Monday!

I sat down to write, and my head was empty, I blame it on Monday.
If someone had looked inside my head this morning they would have seen nothing, nada, not a damn thing. A Swiss guy appeared out of nowhere with a funny hat and yelled into my head Ricolaaaaa!
Did one of Austin Power’s villains steal my mojo last night while I was sleeping? I don’t remember pissing off Doctor Evil. I may as well go about my morning routine.
I heard my wife in the background “You drank ALL of the coffee!? Oink oink.”
This is really shaping up to be one of those Mondays, I vaguely remember drinking some coffee, but still felt like I needed more.
“Don’t worry I’m making more coffee” I say while getting up and rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
I guess I shouldn’t have stayed up so late. Did I really need to lose sleep by shooting up space ships controlled by pimple faced kids online? Well yes, yes I did, those punks needed a good stomping, and maybe some direction, and I was the guy to give it to them.
I like to play online space games, not the ones that require that you to give them your credit card number, but the ones that are free. Playing online games is actually a mandatory requirement if you put on the computer nerd badge; they revoke your membership card if you don’t play at least 3 times per week.
The online gaming world is a colorful place, wherein nobody speaks in real English or writes a real sentence. Well yes, there are the Brazilians and guys from France that attempt English but mainly I’m talking about the punks who say “wut, ur a noob, I’m so high”… “I’m so drunk” is also popular.
You can usually tell the age of your combatant by their smack talk. The Noob callers are under 18, the stoners are usually 18-30, and the ones using complete sentences are geezers.
When stoners proclaim their status as “High” I usually say something like “So how high up are you? I hope you don’t fall, the ground looks pretty hard, and I’m not going to clean up the mess!”
This usually gets a “LOL” from a geezer or a non-high/drunk player, and a “STFU” from the stoned one I was typing to. I’m a bit of a ham bone and live for LOLs; anyone who attempts to be funny loves LOLs. The last thing you want to be doing is tapping the microphone and saying “Hello, is this thing on?” tap tap tap.
Talking with people online is not considered really talking with people but it’s one of the only places I know of where people with differing views can really talk, or beat each other to a verbal pulp. It’s the wild wild west, and you end up chatting with people that you would normally never have the opportunity to chat with.
And today as per my morning routine I decide to take a look at what’s going on at Blog Catalog.
“Humm, what do we have for topics of discussion today?” I wonder while clicking the mouse.
Cell phone loud mouths, adult diapers, cats on a treadmill, and the old atheist versus the god-fearing topics of many. The God vs Godless topics usually start out with a confrontational line that everyone knows will provoke a fight. I click on the topic “Church and State” and get my eyebrows burned off; I was kind of fond of my eyebrows. You’re guaranteed to see a lot of teeth flying and kicks to the nards If you like reading those these knock down drag outs.
Next on my morning routine list is to check my blog statistics. Not too bad, readership is up! I need to check my AdSense account. Yep, they added 16 cents last month. $16.32 since 2005, wow that account is SMOKEN! The cash out point is a hundred bucks so in (does math in head, carry the five) 30 more years (adjusts for inflation) I’ll be able to buy a big pack of gum! Of course I’ll be using a walker and calling people Whipper Snappers while I’m chewing on my hard earned Bubblicious with false teeth.
I hear my wife sweetly ask me “Will you please help the creepy Swiss man out of our house, he’s drinking all of the coffee.”
“So that’s where the coffee went!” I think to myself.
I stretch my arms and yawn, now what should I write about today?
